In this current generation, one can’t simply assume a person’s gender solely by appearance anymore. Many different gender identities have come out here in the recent years and it isn’t so safe to just calmly assume that a person who looks like a boy is a boy or a person who looks like a girl is a girl.
Many different identities are apparent now, such as nonbinary, genderfluid, agender, trans and many others. The main thing people fail to realize is that appearance isn’t the determining factor for it. For example, someone who looks like a girl could actually identify themselves as agender or nonbinary, using pronouns they and them. Someone else could look like a boy but classify themselves as genderfluid, meaning the gender they feel like at a certain time depends on them. Same goes for people who have boy appearances who classify as girls or vice versa.
