Animated TV shows for children have come a long way from the glorified thirty minute toy commercials of the 1980’s. In the last five years especially, there has been a trend towards cartoons featuring more complex and dark plot lines, distinctive visual and narrative styles, greater diversity in characters, complex worlds and the ability to make audiences cry as much as laugh. This subset of cartoons belongs to a wider movement known as the New Sincerity, an aesthetic and ethos that prizes emotional honesty above all else.
