From the looks of it, Joey Votto just took a ball to the chest or is about to throw chunks up all over home plate. However, this just happens to be Votto’s new batter box routine. Votto is no rookie when it comes to well-known batter box routines. In the past, Votto would never step out of the batter’s box. After every pitch: ball, strike, foul tip Votto would remain in the batter’s box without stepping out. It was well-known and somewhat effective. This odd routine would force the pitcher to speed up and have to throw more pitches in a shorter amount of time than usual. Votto is now trying a new stance, bending over with his bat in front of him. After each pitch, Votto seems to almost lean forward on his bat and hold for a brief seconds.
