India unveils the largest solar power plant in the world

India has revealed their newest solar power plant in Kamuthi, Tamil Nadu. It will reportedly cover an area of around 4 square miles and host a capacity of 648 megawatts which is almost 100 megawatts more power than the previous largest plant in Southern California.

It only took an astounding 8 months to build the plant which at full capacity is estimated to power over 150,000 homes. The project features an astounding 2.5 million individual solar panels and cost around 680 million dollars to build.

With this massive project India is on track to become the world’s third largest solar market behind only the US and China. However their plans don’t stop there as India hopes to power 60 million homes with solar power by 2022. Even more impressive is their aim to produce a staggering 40% of their power from non fossil fuels by 2030.
